With Training Camp just 12 days away, it's time to seriously start thinking of our expectations regarding this team. As it stands, the roster is full at 15 and we hold the rights to Patty Mills, so there are some unknowns heading into camp. Most notably, the early portion of the season will be loaded up with Rudy coverage. Will he report to camp or not? But, outside of Rudy, Portland has a lot of questions heading into the regular season.

The biggest question mark has to be the health of Portland's big men. Are Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla ready? Most likely, Joel won't be a go until December, but 9 months after surgery, will Oden be a go for opening night? In my opinion, Portland's playoff lives depend heavily upon the shoulders of Oden. Sure, we can easily make the playoffs, but without a healthy front line, its hard to imagine getting out of the first round. But with a lot of talent heading east this summer, the West is a lot more winnable. It could be a feast or famine year.

Another concern has to be the depth. While some will point to our depth as a way for making it into the postseason last year, a lot still forget it was our depth which caused an awful slow start to the 2009-10 campaign. Players weren't getting their usual minutes, resulting in no rhythm on the court. Being 12 deep is great but I'd like to see the team settle on a 9-10 man rotation so those guys know when they'll play and they can prepare mentally for the upcoming task. A prime example is Jerryd Bayless. Throughout the season, his play was sporadic. He wasn't quite sure when his number would be called, but when there was an injury and he knew he was getting his run for over 20 minutes a night, his confidence soared as well as his performance. Outside of Oden, this is my biggest question. Can the team co-exist with such a talent-laden roster? Think about it. If Rudy comes back, he'd be our 3rd string shooting guard. On a lot of contending teams, he'd be a starter, no questions asked. It could possibly be the deepest team in franchise history. The bottom line still is whether or not it can be used as a gift or a curse.

While every team has their concerns, Portland has a lot riding in their direction. One of the biggest downfalls in year's past was the lack of a bench, but the addition of Wesley Matthews not only brings defense but can score the ball is need be off the pine. Bringing the scoring load will bee 3rd year guard Jerryd Bayless, who will probably earn more consistent minutes after his performance in last year's playoffs. And anytime you have a player of Marcus Camby's caliber on your bench, you're loaded. The second unit brings everything to the table. Camby has rebounding and interior defense on lock, Matthews obtains the grit, hustle, and perimeter defense, and Jerryd has the scoring pop. Not since the 2000 Blazers have I been so excited for our second unit.

They say the best thing about a young team is the next year they come back better and we all saw Batum's progression over in Turkey, Aldridge reportedly worked on a lot of his weaknesses over the summer, including adding additional weight to his frame, and Brandon is back and as healthy as he ever was. In year's past with this core, a slow start has been the norm, but after tasting only a little bit of the NBA postseason buffet before being kicked out, I think the leadership on this team won't allow it. They want to eat longer. Roy is going to be focused like none other and I know he'd love to hang another divisional title banner up in the Rose Garden.

Finally, my X-Factor for the upcoming season, Andre Miller. While everyone else was sidelined last year with some sort of ailment or injury, Dre just kept on ticking and added onto his already impressive Iron Man streak. If players such as Roy and Oden can stay healthy, I think Dre is only going to make them better players. He knows when to feed Greg the ball when he's hot and can let Brandon control the ball or help improve Roy's off the ball game by pin pointing passes in his direction for easy points.

With that all said, how many wins will the Trail Blazers have in 2010-11?

I say 55 is a good goal... it should win the division and possibly get a top two seed in the West. IF everyone is healthy, we should be able to get there. We got 50 last year with an injured roster, so 55 should be the goal. GO BLAZERS!

Oddly enough, 55 is my magical number as well for no rhyme or reason other than its one more than 54 we got two years ago!

I like 57. The way i figure it is two games won for every contributor we loss due to injury.Brandon,Greg, Batum, Pryz  With the exception of Joel who only recorded one with a game winning block.

i'm guessing 55 wins as well. I am also predicting no sweeps at all. We haven't beat LeBron in three years. I have a feeling that is going to change...

I Hate to disagree with you DHawes, but I think it'll be 48-52.  I doubt Przybilla will even play organized ball again; his age for that type of injury would make a recovery truly miraculous.  I know he can do it, but I don't know if he'll be able to perform, due to fear of injury and an entire year of no play.  I'm much more hopeful with Oden's return because of his young age and determination to prove himself as a dominant player.  However, same thing with Joel; I don't know if Oden can be a bruiser down low because he might be cautious about his knees.  And I don't blame him!  1 more injury and retirement would be a justifiable option for him.  And like you said, our hopes of succeeding depend heavily on him, and if my pessimism is justified, we will only come up with 48-52 wins this season.

On another point, the Lakers were able to succeed even with an in-and-out of injury Andrew Bynum because of the strength of their core two, Kobe and Gasol.  If Brandon and LaMarcus step up their game and more importantly their intensity, there's no reason we can't make a deep playoff push even without Greg.  And Greg's so much better than Bynum, if we have him all season, we can beat the Lakers in the playoffs and challenge the Heat or Celtics in the Finals!

With Oden Portland is a 57+ win team and a heavy wcf's contender..

Without Oden Portland is at least a 55 win team and a first round playoff exit again..

Health = 60+ wins and an elite team. Just Oden and Batum playing together from the start of the season in the starting lineup is worth at least 6-8 wins. Then factor in Matthews, Camby, and an improving Bayless off the bench....mmmmm goood! Half the season last year our backup front court was Cunningham and Pendy. Two rookies. Yet we still won 50 games.

I agree with odenrising. Every year I project out wins/losses based on a number of factors...previous record, key losses, key additions, age and experience, competition and intangibles. This year I have Portland going 61-21 and placing 2nd in the West. The contingency is health. But if they can stay healthy, they are as good as anyone.

    Haha 60 wins is a bit far-fetched.
I'd love to say The Blazers won 60+ games at the end of the season, but  don't think it's realistic.
I'd say between 54-56 wins, possibly a division title.
You still got the Jazz, the Nuggets (if Anthony stays) and the Thunder (which I personally don't see), competing (sp?) for it.
Remember the NW division is probably the toughest division behind the SE division.
And the Blazers are injury prone. :/

However I DO NOT, see us winning less than 50 games. If we pulled t together last season we can do it this season.

For no other reason than being a homer, I am saying 60 wins. Upgrading our bench is going to pay off huge dividends in my opinion.

I think 55-59 is a great goal... We should be able to do it because of the depth we have. Our young players got a ton of experience last year which will help us out a lot I think. Please stay healthy everyone!

It seems the general consensus thus far is around the 55 mark...and that's what I have been thinking. I am almost 100% sure we are not going to get WORSE, especially in a conference that is seeing only the return of injured players, with some of the bigger talent going east. I suspect we may be closer to 50 than 60 though. I clearly remember the chemistry issues at the beginning of last season, with our loaded roster, but my perception was that it was primarily an issue of Roy and Miller not being able to figure each other out, something that appeared remedied by the post-season. I don't think we are going to have quite the same issues this time, especially as the starters are the same guys who finished the season. Also, many of our players have been in Portland all summer, working out together and playing pick-up games for weeks (as opposed to players like CP3 and D-Wade, who just tweeted 2 days ago that he was going to his FIRST workout with some of the guys on the team). More important than wins at the end of the season to me? Making it out of the 1st round...which, of course, can be helped by having home court, something win total does affect :)

They'll win 62 games with ease.  I see the team getting ready like no other time and breaking out the box with 12 quick wins.  We will be ready for the season opener and bust teams in the mouth right off the bat.  With LA putting on size and keeping his speed he will be like a train breaking down the middle.  Oden will be OK when ever he comes in and I think it's smart not to push it with him.
Just look at our team and you can't but help to see the improvement.
Rudy made me mad, but I'm quick to forgive him.  I think we will need his shooting on the 2nd squad.
Bayless sounds on hit!  He has the attitude I like to see in a player.  The look of someone that wants to defend home court.  (Scoll I say Scoll) On the court will can"t afford to allow other teams to push us around.  Body up on them and let them know. (THE FIGHTS ON)

If everyone stays healthy, especially Oden (and he stays out of foul trouble) and if he comes back within the first week of the season I think 60 is realistic. Without a consistently healthy Oden I'd say 55.
