Here's a little excerpt i was very tempted to pass on as my own as i have been thinking this very same thing for quite sometime. It's Joel Freeman i believe, speaking with the big fella recently.

In fact, he did way better than OK. PER might not be the best statistical measure in the history of the world, especially for a guy like Oden who makes huge contributions on the defensive end of the floor, but Oden's PER last season was 23.1. Dwight Howard's(notes) was 24.0. During his 21 games last year, he grabbed one out of every five available rebounds while he was on the court. So did Dwight Howard. Per 36 minutes, Dwight scored 19 points. Greg scored 16.7. That's a lot of stats in your face, but Dwight Howard is the gold standard for NBA centers these days and Greg Oden compares pretty favorably.

    Oh yeah, this too.

Oh, and by the way, he's 22 years old. He might have the worst injury luck in the world, but he's bound to have a healthy season sometime even if it's just on accident. If he does, he's going to be one of the better centers around. Ergo, when he says he's not a bust, we should probably nod our heads in agreement.

Im praying Oden has a dominant year.

Absolutely.  IMO...the only thing standing between Greg and superstardom is fate...a variable that noone can accurately predict (unless you believe in Taro cards and/or palm reading).  The PER that you speak of is accurate, and the reason GO has as much value league-wide as he does.  The possiblities with this kid are almost unimaginable.  Then, ofcourse, there is the flip side...At this point in his NBA career, GO is an "all or nothing" proposition, and I believe that is what scares people.  Remember too, that this is a contract year for him.  When he does play, I wouldn't wish my worst enemy be matched up against him.  Much reported has been the team's wish to hold Greg out until such time as to ensure his availability for the post season (remembering that fate is impossible to predict) be probable at the very least.  With GO healthy and contributing (with that PER) heading into the playoffs, this team will be one NOONE wants to face, including LA.  Hey...is it October 26th yet? :)

In short, I too believe in the big fella...alot more so than I do Andrew Bynum

Yeah Greg definitely has a huge amount of potential. To gamble on him now and trade him could be a huge mistake. One of the most ridiculous things I've heard is people comparing Greg to Kwame Brown. ha ha ha.
The big difference is when Greg is actually playing , he doesn't suck.

2 for 2. Greg is a game changer. The whole preparation playbook that opposing teams may have constructed are useless. You cant prepare for this guy. Having said that, this is a contract year for him. As history has shown us , players in their contract year tend to turn it up a notch in the hopes of attracting suitors with deep pockets. Only to get a severe injury the following season, and sitting out an additional one and a half seasons rehabbing. [ See Gilbert Arenas]

i personally think big greg has a better head on his shoulders than gilbert. he doesnt think its all about him. greg would never hold a sign up saying the rose garden belongs to G.O. showing it to the cameras as he walks onto the court.

could greg become that? yeah but anyone can get an inflated ego at some point in their career.
but just like everyone with an inflated ego. you eventually get contraversy. eventually things start to surface that dont look so good on you as a person.

i personally do think greg is going to have a good year this year. allstar? he can. but i'm happy with big greg playing 82 games and helping get us to the WCF. i want to see improvement. in the 2011-2012 season should greg stay healthy? yeah i want to see consistancy and that should come to an allstar appearance.

but this season? stay on the court.

but back on point. i dont believe GO has the all about me personality that most of those players that get 50m dollar contracts.

and not everyone gets hurt. its only week 3 in the NFL. and Peppers is playing some game changen football for the bears. worth every bit of that 42million garrantee'd contract. so far.

GO just hasta do what he do and get it done.

@BW,noted, I was actually talking more about the likelihood of injury after a big contract signing. I agree 100% about the ego thing also. Gilbert signed a $100 + million dollar deal, what two years ago, and whats he played 40 games, and is still owed some $80 mil still.
Oden is definitely a better character guy, no doubt, but injury is equal opportunity.

The One thing that's seems to be missing in this build up to the season is G.O. The buzz around him is gone, many people seem to be taking the  hopeful sympathy route with him. Treating him with kid gloves and all. You can see it in the interviews, the wait and see training sch. On The bench during fan night, the lack of 5 on 5 this week - What a sad state of affairs. Wake up people it's over with this project, he's about as exciting as the big sack of rotten potatoes in your cupboard. I have faith in this team and in the coaching of nate and in roy, but to have faith in G.O. is like waiting for Godot - simply a hope with no realization - like waiting for the unicorn to give you the three wishes you always wanted. Be realistic people become Agregodenians and believe in reality - he's done!!! Move on.OG

The reality is... you don't know either way if he's done or not, so thanks dad but I am able to make up my own mind and as long as Oden is a Blazer I will support him. His problems are not his fault, so I won't hold that against him. And when he does play you can see the huge potential. If you want to be negative about it then so be it and maybe you can move on, but don't tell me to become Agregodenian. Why are there always people trying to sway everyone into thinking the exact same way as them, instead of simply offering their observations and opinions and letting people decide for themselves.

I agree Toml - I was a bit harsh, maybe I shouldn't drink a half bottle of vodka and get on the blazer site and criticize someone, who deep within, I want to believe in, but find all the signs pointing in the wrong direction. I watched the interview and GO said he was, "right where he needed to be", I thought yes, but No, you should be on the court playing. I know it is out of his hands and he is working with what he has been dealt by reality, so I'm not hating on him just to hate on him. I'm hating on my stubborn desire to believe in him, It just pisses me off I have to wait to see him be great for a mysterious amount of time, and being drunk and all, I was just venting. I'm sorry I told any of you who are the faithful, what to do. I trust that you all are smart enough to make up your own minds and don't need me an old drunk basketball fan to help you all see the light of being an AGregOdenian - Even though I think the Name is kinda cool, lets just hope that after the season is over, our team management and the rest of the league haven't become AGREGODENIANS due to his abject failure to stay healthy. Even if you disagree with my disbelief and desire to convince others to jump ship, the rest of the Basketball media universe has the same suspicion about Oden. The analysis of the rest of the basketball world is something to consider because it is connected to our small world here in portland, like it or not, the opinions of others do matter in this globalized world of basketball. Bottom line, Oden's stock right now is pretty low and I'm selling. You can keep your shares TomL and I will respect you for holding on, but I will sell and if I'm wrong, You can be the first one to say,"I told you so", and I will say, "yes you did, good job sir, I was wrong" then we will move on to other topics. mm yeah went back and reread didn't really mention what i wanted to.

meant to mention that i believe some sports players in anyspot after they sign their "big deal" relax and take it easy during the offseason not working as hard as they could. or have in the past. perhaps not work as hard at taking care of their bodys hense leading to a hightened chance of injury.

i agree injury is equal opportunity but would you say there are  ways to lessen the chance of injury? such as eating right, taking care of your body things like that.
there are freak injuries though. for example... jumping up to block a shot and your thigh muscle being soooo strong that it tears your kneecap in half.

lol that's entertaining. comparing kwame to greg? lololol
kwame is a bust because when he is on the court he just doesnt do what a #1 pick can do.

but greg, when hes on the court... the NBA annalisits say he could live up to his #1 pick status... he just has to stay on the court and get his body correct.

to me a #1 pick is a bust when they arn't able to change a game when they're in there.
not when they're too injuried to play. but when they can? they change the team entirely. and greg does. kwame never did.

I agree with that, but Greg could still be a bust if he never plays more than half a season in his career. But we won't know that until his career is over or if the league gives up on him prematurely. Yeah that kwame analogy is plain ignorant.
BTW i still think that Greg's latest was a freak accident. I can't remember where i saw it but I saw the overhead camera angle view when he broke it. In every other angle I saw it just looks like he goes straight up and it snaps. But the overhead one you can see him planting one direction and then he changes direction and goes after the block by twisting as he's jumping in a real awkward position for his knee. I think the twisting put an abnormal amount of stress in a different way on the kneecap. Not like just going up for a simple jump. It made me feel a little better about it, I mean when I watch where Blake Griffin breaks his kneecap I can't even see what happens or where he does it. He looks like he lands normally and then he just starts limping.

Are you sure your name isn't Kenny V? ha ha They are always poking fun at Vance and liquor for some reason on 95.5. But my point wasn't to say I am right you are wrong and I told you so, because I very well could be wrong. We just don't know. For now I still see the potential so I am all for greg, but 4 years is a long time to wait to have someone consistently contribute. If he doesn't contribute in the season and the playoffs when he returns this year, I am going to be willing to re-evaluate. If I do end up being right I will just be happy to watch Greg play.

Anyway it's ok to vent, I was venting too. After dealing with a certain person always arguing with me every chance he gets and always calling Greg a bust and comparing him to Kwame, I just figured you were jumping on that bandwagon.

I believe in G.O., too.  So many doubters man.  I see all the hard times he went through.  That photo leak, partying, etc..  But hey, at least he's honest about it.  And to be, being honest is important.  It's the first step into improving.  With that said, Oden has matured a lot.  And it's weird, it feels like he has matured in a different way, especially when comparing him to Durant.  Durant matured a lot on the court.  Oden matured a lot off court.  I believe those off-court maturing will some how help Oden do much better than he thought he could do.

I do believe Oden can still be what everybody expected him to be.  Why?  He did come back from microfracture surgery, like other players have (i.e. Stoudemire), and was performing better than he did before the surgery.  Also, when I saw he go down last season grabbing his leg, I thought, "oh no, not his ACL!".  Granted, a fractured kneecap is not pretty, but I felt relieved that is was a ligament tear.  You can fracture parts of your body and not suffer permanently for the rest of your life, unlike some nasty ligament tears which never seem to be right again.  Blake Griffin had the same thing happened to him, and it took him a whole year off to get back on the court.  Oden is running, is in shape, and the Blazers are doing the right thing by taking their time in bringing him back.  He still is young, is still motivated to be on the court, and now has quite the mentor in Camby to help him hone his skills on the defensive end.  All he has to do is stay healthy, that's it.
I am a fan of blazers playing harder than anybody else on the court
