The Lakers have begun preliminary talks with Denver about acquiring Carmelo Anthony.  I for one would not like this case of the rich get richer to come to fruition.  Basically indicating the main part of the trade would be Melo for Bynum...  Bynum is possibly the 2nd most injured young center in the league behind Oden.  If this deal gets done it would be like the Lakers getting Pau Gasol all over again, essentially getting Melo for virtually nothing.  Denver, wanting to shed more cap space, will probably not do a straight player for player.  If that includes Billups however, this trade could elevate the Lakers back to the top

I don't think it's that big of a threat.  There is a lot more talent on other teams this season that I don't see the Lakers winning.  Also, they'd be getting rid of a lot of height that has helped them win championships.  Stupid move on both parts.  Also, Melo is overrated.  Sure he can have an explosive game, and score lots of points, but he's not a good defensive player, and not really a good leader either.

With Kobe beginning to dwindle, they only need him for scoring.  Although true they don't have a lot of talent and he is one of their bigs, Odom can slide over to C and Bynum is a decent big when healthy.... WHEN being a big word there.  Usually when talks are brought up but don't tend to go anywhere its reported that "Team X called asking about player Y"  not "Team A and Team B have begun preliminary negotiations"  I am skeptical of the ability to pull this off as well, however it is more worth discussing and looking into more than some of the topics I have run into.

It Look like they are trying to have a big three like Miami and the triangle O is the perfect for Carmelo and he doesn't have to be the leader because we all know who is on the team and if they do manage to get billups that not one or two but three player who can make big shots but their bench will suffer because LO will be a starter, but i think he will be knick when it all said and done.

What's even more sickening if this trade happens, it's because LA gets what they want. All along all Melo has said is "East Coast, East Coast, East Coast". But just because it's LA, he'll make an exception. Also, Denver would be better off with the Melo savings than nabbing Bynum who is one of the most overrated players in the game. And the original poster is right, it would be like Gasol all over again. Instead of La falling from graces in 2 years when Kobe declines, they continue to be an elite squad. They need to be in the cellar for a while. No franchise should be constantly dominant decade after decade.

Let's hope it's all smoke and mirrors; just a lever ploy to get Melo to NY with LA trying to up the ante.

this trade could elevate the Lakers back to the top
Im sorry i forgot that they fell off.....? perhaps its because they havent 3-peated yet theyre not " on top"
    hahah.
This would be an Epic Trade. Beyond Epic.
Bynum, may be an injury waiting to happen, but to say " getting melo for nothing." is just flat out not true.
Drew is Huge, and that alone is lethal. He is young, and he is blossoming into a great offensive player down low. The double 7 footer combination is a great weapon for the lakers, and god forbid another team who already has a 7 footer try to get him....
I don't think it's that big of a threat.  There is a lot more talent on other teams this season that I don't see the Lakers winning.  Also, they'd be getting rid of a lot of height that has helped them win championships.  Stupid move on both parts.  Also, Melo is overrated.  Sure he can have an explosive game, and score lots of points, but he's not a good defensive player, and not really a good leader eithe

seeing as how you are a team in the west, and Melo would more than likley sign for one year, i would have to disagree and say that there is nothing more threatening to the Blazers in the playoffs than this trade going down........
Defense is not everything. example, OKC. They work teams, not just teams, they work some of the best teams at that.....Melo is without a doubt the best scorer in the NBA. Not talking about ppg, or career highs, if you just watch him for a quarter of play, you will understand what i am talking about, no one can guard him. So he may not play D, but he sure knows how to break a D down.....
The Lakers are stacked on superstar talent and this addition would just be a nightmare for anyone who plays them, if Kobe is dwindling then let him dwindle because Anthony can learn from him and perhaps take over one day.
He is NOT a leader, but he is an amazing basketball players, and the lakers are not shorthanded on acquiring leaders or amazing player.

if this goes thru it will be a let down... how is it that portland can not land these type of players when we have so much more to offer... and yes i know u guys think melo is a knuckle head but if him and lamarcus were on the same team imagine the pick and rolls... who is gonna be able to stop that combo (not that it'll ever happen) but just saying...

Tay Dallas, San Antonio, Boston and possibly Orlando could beat LA this year with ease.  They are not the threat they were last year.  Artest is fed up, Gasol is complacent. They just dont care anymore so yes I believe they are not still on top.  Saying Bynum is blossoming is slightly true, however when Oden is on the court he was dominant on the offensive side also.  It's keeping them on the court that is the issue....

And Dustin... Thank you for acknowledging that this could potentially be hazardous to not only the Portland fanbase, but the NBA fanbase as a whole.  All small market teams are going to feel cheated that LA got Melo for a injured center that wont be a cornerstone anytime soon.  It isn't fair to keep them on top because they are LA.  Boston fed on the bottom for a while and only got back to contention with several strategic moves.  Ray Allen from a rebuilding Sonic team, and Garnett from the rebuilding T-wolves, among other smaller and less noticable trades.  Remember when Telfair started for Boston?  They should void any potential trade on the basis that this could potentially lose more fans than it brings in.  Bring the fanbases back to teams and not to the players NBA, please...

Good thing rumors are just rumors.  I was told, unconfirmed, that this trade is not going down.  The Lakers don't want to give away Bynum for Melo.

well i am just saying..... the last time i checked it was Phil Jackson who was the most important factor to any chance of winning a championship.

The Lakers are a 4th quarter team.......they have the ability to handle their season the same way....counting them out now, strongly ill advised

Phil Jackson aint much of a coach. If it was not for Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen he would have went down in history as just another mediocre coach in the NBA. He could not win the Championship with just Jordan or Pippen that was proven. He went to LA and had Kobe Bryant so they got the best center in the NBA at the time Shaq because he could not win it with just Kobe. When Shaq left they could not win until they got Pau Gasol ,Derrick Fisher, Odom, Bynum. I am sorry but my grandson who is 5 could win with those combo's.  Phil being a great coach no,but being in the right place at the right time yes. He cant go to another team and rebuild because he knows this. All this being said he will be in the Hall of fame and when he does he should be holding the book by Dr. Suess "Did I ever tell you how lucky you are".

Barnettfan, I'm sorry but to say Phil isn't much of a coach is way off target.  The Bulls were not the powerhouse they were until Jackson became their coach.  He is possibly the modern day Lombardi of the NBA

Sorry aint drinking that kool-aid on Jackson. I know I am a minority in this but I know I am not alone. Does he have an eye for talent sure he does but most coaches do. He was handed half that championship team by Doug Collins. As far as the Lakers go he was basically given an open checkbook with good GM'S backing him.
I dont remember a time when he had to pull something out of his butt to win when his superstars were injured in fact he has had the luck that most of his teams stayed relativly healthy throughout the season. I really would like to see what he could do with the Blazers as injury prone as we are. My bet is that it would be worse than Nate.

I agree that he wouldn't shine here in Portland, but thats because our team isn't set up for a triangle offense.

Yeah forget the kool aid bro
its clear your sippin on some heavier stuff......
Phil Jackson is The Key to Winning. Its a certainty that is similar to the rules of gravity, what goes up, must come down.
What Phil coaches, most likely wins. I mean look at Jerry Sloan, there you have a great coach, who has played the game like Phil, knows its mechanics, but for some reason cannot get the gold, not even once.
While this MF Phil over here , he's got more rings than he does fingers? Him an Bill Russel are chillin in the 10+ club.

Jackson is lucky or blessed to get then opportunity to coach such players as MJ and Kobe, and vice versa.
But i remember the rumor that was goin on during summer..... " Phil Jackson to leave the Lakers,  Jackson wants to leave but it is unclear of where he is heading, word is he is waiting for LeBron to decide, so that Phil can follow an say he coached the greatest players in MJ, Kobe and now LeBron."
I swear, if Phil hooked up with Bron, those "ring" jokes would be cut out real quick.

Shut up with the Leboring talk. Go to the Miami site and ask to grope him there. And everyone will proceed with the lack of rings jokes because he is sorry in the playoffs. Except you because it's clear you are sipping on his excrement.

If Phil Jackson never had MJ or Kobe/Shaq, there's no way he'd have as many, if any, rings. I'm sure Nate could win if he had MJ and Pippen in their prime, and Kobe and Shaq. Hell, even PJ Carlisimo could win at least one with those guys.
