I highly suggest that everyone go to blazers.com and watch the top 10 from 07-08 season. I just watched it to review and most of them didn't even compare to anything we saw this year, but what I did notice was the look on Martel's face when he exploded for 24 pts in the quarter against Utah at the RG. On the very last shot of the reel you can see in his eyes everything this team was lacking this year. I can't wait to see him back in the starting lineup. It is all in the eyes. Even in B-Roy's 52 pt game this year you didn't see that look of a predator. B-Roy was just in a zone, Martel wanted to eat somebody that game and that is the one thing this team lacks, the ability to switch into predator mode and attack until the game is over. I can't wait to get him back, that video sent chills up my spine. Anyone who thinks we need to change anything in our starting lineup, watch that video again and add another two years of maturity and basketball IQ to it. Wow. I can't wait.

Yes. I too am excited. But I wouldn't say Roy lacks it, he's got fire in the eyes; but I do have to agree Roy should bring it out a little more than he does, like when he dunked on Cheikh Samb.

All of that "predator" look comes in different forms. It's also called swagger. And Roy not only has a pace of his own, but a swagger of his own.

I'm not so sure about that. Swagger is important, but it visually manifests itself in a player's movement, in their walk. Swagger is a product of emotion. That predatory look I am talking about goes much deeper, it is a product of our primal drives (prey drive, play drive, pack drive, territorialism, etc.) It's the same drive that puts sharks into a frenzy when they smell blood in the water. Sharks are a great example because they have zero emotions. All they have are basic drives. That is the look you see in Martel's eyes in that photo, he smelled the blood in the water, his focus became clearer and everything around him seemed to slow down. That is what has been missing this year. We saw them play with a swagger several times this year, but I rarely (if at all) saw that look in anyone's eyes. That is what has gotten me so excited for this next year. If the others can feed off of that then this team will go to a whole new level.

In that case, yeah. Webster and Bayless got that. I call it fire. That's what we did lack this season, and I believe if we have smart players with fire it will push us over the top.

I know Bayless is a funny example because oddly enough he DOES have that, I agree, but he lacks the confidence to go with it. You rarely see those reversed. He doesn't have the swagger to back up his predatory instinct. It's like bringing a knife to a sword fight. You have the same skill level, the same intent, but the wrong tool. That is one thing they will build on this summer is getting him aclimated to the NBA game so his confidence can match his fire, his predatory instinct.

Dude, RCR, these people are agreeing with you man, lol. At least allow them the opportunity to share their perspectives without instantly coming back and contradicting them. Is Martel a predator? At times, yes. But without consistency and his tendancy to often times (in the past) complete disappear for looong stretches of games, it remains to be seen just how useful and often his predatory instinct will come into play.

I am not disagreeing with them at all. This is a converstional topic. I like being active on the boards and talk with people about the Blazers. If someone takes the time to post on a message board, I should give them the courtesy of keeping the conversation going and keeping it interesting. We are offering different sides of a similar perspective. It is beneficial to everyone so we can take what we have heard from the messageboards and apply it to our future evaluations of player performance. As far as consistency goes, last season was the first season that was his to take, he was injured. The season before that Travis was the guy, and before that it was Ime Udoka. This was a different team when he was drafted than it is now, infact it is a different team than the last season he actually played in (I don't count his 5 min.) This is a team that benefits Martel because of the attention demanded on Roy and LA, not to mention this is an incredibly unselfish team for their talent level. This will only make Martel's comeback easier. I think the combination of personal growth in basketball through coaching along with this team being who they are will allow him to be more consistent and have a break out season. Now don't get me wrong, he probably wont come out firing from the gates. This injury will have effected his confidence going into the season, but as the season goes along he will feed off this team's energy and feed off his role and once he is comfortable in the competitive nature again look for him to breakthrough. That is what will push us deeper into the Playoffs. I also think that with Martel in, Rudy becomes the 6th man off the bench instead of TO. I think moving Roy to PG with Rudy at the SG and Martel at the SF will be a hard match for any opponent. Too much outsided firepower with all three having the ability to take it to the hole and move without the ball. Rudy will get his "more important role" this coming season with the injection of Martel.

The thing that scares me about all those 3 playing at the same time is teams will be able to run it against us, or force fouls on B-Roy. I say this because B-Roy and Martel hit the offensive boards, or try to and if we don't get it we have no one back there to stop the break. If Broy was back there or even Rudy one of three things will happen, a foul, easy 2, or a foul. Hopefully that wont last long, but in the meantime of it happening it'll hurt us.

I see what you're saying, but it's really easy for Nate just to tell them to not crash boards. He'll be able to decide who he wants crashing and who he wants getting back. Thats something thats really easy to change.

Even Rudy goes after the offensive boards regularly. Yeah, I see where it could get difficult, but if you look at what happened this last year, the coaches tried to get Outlaw to crash the offensive boards so we could get more second chance opportunities off those misses. It never happened. The odds are more in Portland's favor of getting the offensive rebound and getting a second look than in favor of it resulting in fastbreak points for the other team. It comes down to risk vs. reward and the risk of a few fast break points here and there off those is easy to take when the odds are in favor of the Blazers getting more looks at the basket. If Martel hits the boards then that leaves B-Roy and Rudy to get back on D. All you need is two back quickly in a zone to stop the fast break, our bigs can out run any others in the NBA. Yeah, I definitely think that if Martel crashes the offensive board that would be a huge impovement over this last year.

Offensive boards helped us win games this is a hard fact. Nearly every night the Blazers out rebounded their opponents they beat them.

Whining about possibly open court fast break points when they crash the boards hard is a joke really. This team does get back well on defense even when Przy and Roy crash the boards.

I wouldn't say anybody was whining. This isn't "Jim Rome" we don't need to crash another poster in order for our posts to hold water, and that was exactly the point I was trying to make. That crashing the offensive boards is a positive more than a negative for this team.
