    During 2011, Chris Johnson...
    Exceeded Expectations (33)
     75%
    Met Expectations (11)
     25%
    Failed To Meet Expectations (0)
     0%

We're going to start something new this offseason and review each player's season, how they performed, whether they met expectations or not and if you'd like to see them in uniform for the Blazers to start the 2011-12 season. Up next is our backup center, Chris Johnson.

Up until Game Three of the Western Conference First Round, there would have been no "Season In Review" for Chris Johnson; there simply wasn't a large enough sample size to judge his performance on. It didn't appear that Chris would be getting a second chance with the Trail Blazers after his 10-day contract expired back in February. But after the Trail Blazers sent away the only big man depth they had in the Gerald Wallace trade (Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham), all of the sudden Portland was in need of a center. Luckily enough, CJ had slipped through the cracks again as the Celtics failed to pick him up after his 10-day concluded with their franchise. Wasting little time, the Trail Blazers inked Johnson once more, this time for the remainder of the season.

While Chris got a second crack at impressing the Blazer coaches, it seemed like he was only there as another body to use in practice and an insurance policy in case another post player went down with an injury or was in deep foul trouble. That all appeared to be true until LaMarcus Aldridge needed a quick breather with 32 seconds left in the third and Marcus Camby hindered with 4 fouls. Already trailing the series 0-2 and the game tied, Coach McMillan was a pickle and had only one player he could turn to, Chris Johnson. Immediately CJ let the Rose Garden know he was no ordinary "minor leaguer" as he denied JJ Barea's driving layup attempt on the very first defensive play he saw that night. 5:36 later, Chris left the court to a roaring standing ovation from the BlazerManiacs. In that span, he helped Portland outscore Dallas by 7, the highest +/- rating of any player that night. But there was one play in particular that got the crowd on their feet and simultaneously gave him an upper hand at a roster spot for the following year. Dirk dribbled hard to his left across the middle of the paint, setting the defender up for his patented fall-away jump shot off of one leg which is unblockable, or so he thought. As the perfectly arched shot reached it peak, the outstretched arm of Chris Johnson came out of nowhere to send the ball back down mid-court, cementing the Blazers win. While the box score read 3 rebounds and 2 blocks, it was his presence inside which closed driving lanes.

Although the sample size is still extremely small, one has to think there is more where that came from in regards to his defensive prowess during Game Three. It's not like playing D is anything new to CJ. After all he was awarded the NBDL's Defensive Player of the Year in which he averaged 16.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 35 games for the Dakota Wizards. Given the fact that he's only 25 years old and centers are at such a high premium in today's NBA, it's no surprise the fans are already hopping on to the Chris Johnson bandwagon. During the annual "You Be The GM" series over on OregonLive, Chris received a 92% vote to stay, the fourth highest on the team. But the $64,000 question still remains, can Chris put together that type of performance over the course of 82 games? Unfortunately for the Blazers, the only extended time CJ saw this year was the last game of the season against Golden State in which many regulars sat out and it looked more like a pickup game than a professional one. In that contest, Chris did manage to pull down 13 rebounds and score 8 points in 40 minutes.

    Chris Johnson Blocks Dirk

Let all of that information soak in for a moment Rip City. Looking back, did the Blazers catch lightning in a bottle with Chris Johnson? Can be become the type of dominant defender he was on the NBDL level and bring that up to the NBA on a consistent basis or did he just catch Dallas by surprise?

I absolutely agree! he has great instincts and has proven he can play in this league, and he will only continue to grow as a player, and the stronger he gets the better. This kid is crazy athletic!! I think that he could provide some good bench minutes next season (if there even is one) and if there isnt, thats just more time in the weight room to bulk up.

I don't think anyone is expecting him to be the next Mutombo, but as mentioned he's young and cheap. Sign him to a inexpensive deal and hope he prospers. Sure he doesn't weight a ton but he's quick, which is better then strength any day of the week.

Lock him in. Hopefully he can get a trainer who can help him with his strength, not his size. A few pounds graduall as he gets older. Like a Pippen Chandler.

I too am aboard the CJ bandwagon. He doesn't need any plays ran for him. We don't need him to score. All we need is someone who is going to alter shots in the paint and secure rebounds. He may be skinny but not many can out reach him for loose balls with those long arms he has.

Agree.  A keeper, particularly if this team is moving in an "uptempo" direction.  Johnson's weaknesses are most often exposed in the half court.  I see a young Camby as his "best case", and THAT you have to lock up.

BTW, Chris...if you happen to read this at some point, THANK YOU for demonstrating passion and pride with every minute played.  Outside of the Thrilla, I doubt anyone ANYWHERE cheered louder with your foul on Dirk.  Next time though, stick your chest out and stare him down after, rather than acting remorseful.  With Joel no longer in scarlet red, white and black, this team desperately needs that kind of presence.  Interesting to this observer that a "stop-gap" player signed to a short term minimal deal become a leader and an example to the rest of the team in a single moment.  Nice work big fella.

Blazers made a huge mistake and cut Javale McGee after Summer League a few year's back. Can you imagine that? We didn't "want to spend the time and let him grow". Let's look at him now.

    - In 27 minutes per game for the Wizards, McGee averaged 10 n' 8 with 2.4 blocks per game.

Who's stat line does that remind you of ??? Oden perhaps ? ? ?

Nothing wrong with keeping a young, agressive shot blocking Center that hasn't fully grown into his body yet. Give a flower some water, and watch it grow. That's what I say.

His wingspan alone is worth the money we're giving him. Now add the effort in the postseason and suddenly I'm wishing the rest of the team would learn how to turn it up in similar ways. I'm also tentative on the idea of bulking up. Everyone seems to want to see a body double of Dwight Howard. But look at the bulked up big man on our roster... Oh yeah, his knees collapsed under the sheer weight of him. Don't get me wrong; I don't want CJ to get pushed around in the paint, but I also don't want us to ruin a good thing by tweaking it too much. Kind of how we might be turning Crash into an outside jump shooter.

I agree with your thoughts on crash... but in the playoffs he proved what he is capable of and we all knew he could do. Well the last game that is. If Gerald would'nt have injured his back in the first half and had to sit out the seccond quarter I beleive the blazers owuld have kept the lead and forced a game 7. But thats all in the past and worth nothing now.

What? We never cut Javale McGee. The Wizards took him with the 18th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft

sign chris johnson now and use the money you save on his cheap contract to feed that boy some cheeseburgers. If he can work with LA's trainer and bulk up a bit like LA and keep his quickness he's going to be pure nasty.
