    I know that we were going for a clean slate here, but I thought we could make one last go at Oden next season before giving up altogether.  I know it's a big if...but if he comes back and has success with someone else it will make the whole thing hurt that much worse.  It's not my millions getting thrown around though.  Caproom will be an asset moving forword.

    right decision - Oden does not seem to be capable to play at high level anymore - it was sensless to spend so much money for him. Sad but true. Time for new beginning.

    I would also have liked to see him give it a try next season. OK, it has been a major headache. However, the guy (when healthy) looked good and he is not even 25. I would have liked to keep him until the doctors said he absolutely cannot play. Having him sit on the bench is just as good as having a 12th guy that really never plays, anyway.

    I just get this terrible feeling he will put it all together, play awesome for 3,4 or 5 seasons and everyone in Portland will be "I can't believe we cut that guy."

    @ ACM

    That's what I'm feeling.  I understand the clean slate thing but did we need to go this far?  I suppose whether this was the right call or not will have to be a wait and see thing.  If the cap room put's us in the running for an amazing FA then I'm in.  If he comes back and is healthy for several seasons he very well could be an all star.  That would make this worse than the Sam Bowie debacle...which is a quarter century behind us and we're still living that down.

    Finally some sanity in the Blazer organization. Oden will never play again unless he grows a new set of legs.

    Oden will crash to the floor If and when he ever plays again. I never liked drafting him in the first place. And frankly, he wasn't that good healthy. Got into foul trouble against good teams early. Didn't do or learn the little things. He was still work in progress when healthy. Don't worry fans, Oden will not come back and bite you playing for another NBA team.

     @machwonder  eh...maybe.

    After thinking more on this, I've come to realize how much attrition we took on from all of the injury disappointment with this guy.  There is a chance that he could've come back next season.  But...the risks of starting another season with more injury disappointment WAS too great.  It does out-way the possible benefit of getting him healthy.  At this point the chances seem very slim that he will play again...without issues with injuries.  We would all be on pins and needles waiting for the next one to hit.

    Ahhh rats, I should probably change my background photo soon.

    It's a sweet picture of Oden dunking it on a couple Thunder.

    I think everything on this thread so far is very extreme. Frankly, I'm about 99% positive Greg will play in the NBA again. He's had knee problems, but through successful surgery and rehab he will get back into the game. I don't know during what season that might happen, and I'm sure he'll go unsigned for at least the beginning of next season. That said, his salary needed to come off our cap because we need pieces with which to build. In firing Nate, the management essentially said NO MORE waiting for this team they built 6 years ago to come to fruition. Waiving Greg is, more or less, a symbol of beginning a new era.

    So he wasn't a cancerous tumor that needed to be removed, but he wasn't a key piece that we needed to keep at all costs. And chances are he will do well with another team, but there's no telling whether he would've gotten caught up in the LeBron/Melo/Dwight mentality and left for a big-market team after this year anyway. We already got nothing out of that first round pick, and, even if Greg came back to the Blazers healthy this year or next year. He wouldn't really be a product of the 2006 Draft but an investment payoff. Well... In recent years, Americans have figured out what it means to cope with horrible investment returns. Paul Allen certainly wouldn't be unfamiliar with the concept.

    Let's move forward and not even pay attention to the "what ifs". As a Blazer fan, I'm so painfully DONE with saying "what if."

    Why did they sign Oden this year? What a waste of a roster spot! Not to mention a waste of millions of dollars.
