For those unaware, the Jazz have decided (as expected my many) to match Portland's so-called "toxic" offer to Paul Millsap. Before everyone starts freaking out, this should NOT be viewed as a bad thing. Yes, he would have made a terrific backup, but do we really want to be paying an undersized PF $8 mil a year to only play 15-20 minutes a night? I don't think so. Here's why its not a bad thing, and then I'll explore some of our options. / Realistically speaking, the Blazers have had a consistently poor financial track record for a number of years. We've valued talent over character which has landed us some unsavory characters (Darius Miles, Eddy Curry, Damon Stodomire). We've had a poor track record for developing young talent (Jermaine O'Neal). We've traded for old, past-their-prime stars (Scotty Pippen). So a LOT of bad contracts were handed out. And now, for the first time in a long time, we are actually under the cap. In fact, we're $8.5 million under the cap. / I don't envy the position Paul Allen is in (young/talented team, huge expectations, hungry fan base), but he's being a complete and utter moron. He was smart enough to stick with KP through some losing seasons to get back under the cap to supposedly "build a contender", but he needs to get off his "break even in 2 years" binge he's currently on. It is plain contradictory and stupid give the green light to KP to improve the team, then approve contracts of 5 years/$50 mil and 4 years/$32 mil AND THEN NOT LET KP SIGN BRANDON ROY TO A MAX 5-YEAR DEAL UNDER THE "EXCUSE" OF BREAKING EVEN!!!! He's ok with GROSSLY overpaying for an old SF and a backup PF but won't give the FRANCHISE the keys to the thing?? Mr. Allen, do you ACTUALLY care about winning or just fielding the NBA's version of moneyball? (Consistently "contending" team that is intriguing, cost effective, and exciting but will ultimately never win a championship.) The next year will tell which it is, and to be quite honest, right now i think it's the latter. I'm not frustrated with the lack of free agent signings this offseason. I never thought Turkoglu was a good fit, and I think we overpaid for Millsap. I'm frustrated with you saying one thing a doing another. They have names for people like that. They're called politicians. / So here's the situation/why the Jazz matching is a good thing: we're $8.5 mil under the cap currently. We have Darius Miles' $9 mil coming of the books after this year. We can get another mil or two under by renouncing the rights to Freeland and Koponnen. (Which we should do anyways. Anyone who thinks they're actually ever going to come over and contribute is just kidding themselves. It's been four years. It's not happening. Get over it.) And as a matter of fact, we only have Przybilla and Webster on the books for after this year. So we basically have $13-$15 mil ON the books for 2010-2011. Currently, we have all the money in the world to keep the core of the team in tact (Roy, Aldridge, Rudy, Oden, Bayless, Batum). Plus, the "Summer of 2010" will have a ton of good FA to sign. If we take care of our core, then we can go after some solid backups/role players (guys just like Steve Blake and Joel Przybilla). So what are our options for the rest of this offseason? / Well I've already went over the first option. We can do nothing now, satisfy PA's urge to "break even in 2 years", and take care of our core and then get some good players next summer. It's a fine option to be sure, but I'm not sure it gets us out of the first round next year. The second option is a variation of the first option: do nothing FOR NOW, but see what is available via trade once the season starts. Not the most exciting option, but it does give us a huge amount of flexibility in season, and lets us do a financially uneven trade once the season begins. / The third option, as John Canzano pointed out, there is Lamar Odom. I'm not the biggest fan of this option. I'm actually not a fan at all. He's a fine guy character-wise. Anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention. He doesn't have any off the court issues, and because of his and Aldridge's supposed issues Blazer fans are immidiately prejudiced against him. My issue with Odom is his inconsistency. The best way to describe Odom would be that he has all the talent in the world when he wants to. I agree with Canzano that he would be a great fit on this team, but only if he played hard every night. And he doesn't. If the Blazers could give him a contract with low guaranteed money and just make it incentive laden every year, then I think it would be worth signing him. / Right now I think it would be best for KP to start exploring some trade scenarios, because there aren't really a lot of free agents out there worth signing. Glen Davis, Drew Gooden, Ben Wallace, and Joe Smith are all intriguing options for backup big men (though there are concerns with each). David Lee is still out there, but he wants way more money than we are going to pay him, plus he wants to start. (Though if we were willing to give up $32 mil to Millsap, why not give it to Lee?) One thing is for sure, Coach Nate does not want to be forced to rely heavily on Pendergraph and Cunningham this year. While losing Millsap was not a bad thing, I'm just not sure where the rest of this offseason is headed.

    Wall-o-freaking-text...
Anyway for one. Please stop freaking over the contract crap, its getting old and me and im sure many others are tired of hearing about it. We still have no idea what is going on or being said so freaking over it or speculating about what is happening is stupid and a waste of time. Plus its gonna get done soon anyway..
Secondly im not shocked the Jazz kept Millsap, there was maybe a 10% chance they wouldnt (if that) so im not really heartbroken. If it happened great if not then we're onto the next thing. Im one of those people that is fine with the group we have and would gladly start the season this way. Do i think something will happen? Ya. I dont know when or what but something will happen before or during the season. I think a lot of you need to stop acting like you know how to be a GM or a Owner, id love to see some of you guys that seem to complain and hate everything going to try and do they're job. Actually have to deal with the players the agents the teams. Its not a simple process by any means and stuff doesnt always work the way everyone wants it to despite what us the fans would like.
Regarding Odom... he is NOT fine character-wise in the slightest. Just because he isnt a crackhead off the court doesnt mean hes a great o'll guy. Hes a Punk like most the other Lakers. Plus if you have seen anything thats been going on with him hes basically turned down several offers from the Lakers cause he wants 5 years. Forget the fact they just won a championship, forget the fact he would be getting a good 9mil a year. Some loyalty. Not to mention half the time he plays like crap and only really plays when he feels like it.
Do you really want THIS in a Blazer uniform? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQtRXQpZHHg

Mark my words Roy will be a Blazer for the next 4-5 seasons minimum. Don't worry your pretty little head about the contract.

It will get done their is no way in hell Paul actually thinks that Roy is not the reason this team is winning.

Its as plain as day and I'm sure even if he didn't know KP would tell him.

Thanks, Isaac, for reminding us that Odom often doesn't have his head in the game. I was starting to think he might be a nice addition because his size and skill-set would be a nice fit, but we need players who don't check out in the fourth quarter of a tight game.

Does anybody else think it is ridiculous to call Paul Allen a "idiot" or a "moron?" I do. The guy is a bazillionaire because he is so smart, although his expertise may not be sports. I think they are worried about negotiations with LA and GO, and the strategy is to look tough when dealing with BRoy because everybody knows he is the franchise. Sounds like KP's workings to me, so stop bringing up the past. We know that Darius and Bonzi got too much money, but the new Blazers are patient, methodical and will hopefully make better decision. The deal will get done and we'll have forgotten all about it by the beginning of the season. And the Millsap deal was never really going to happen, so don't make this out to be another mistake by management. It's all part of a master plan that I hope brings Portland a championship.
I am a fan of healthy centers.

I will admit it. On this one I went against my own principles and skipped the initial post shearly because of it's length. I do agree that Paul Allen is NOT a moron or an idiot especially after reading "The Glyde." Clyde Drexler's autobiography of his career. It gave me a new and better understanding of the guy. I trust that he and KP have the interests of both the Player and the Organization in hand. The problem here is the third head of the Hydra, Vulcan. Unfortunately they have way too much say in all of this. They are like the boosters of a college team, too much say in what happens without the general knowledge needed to make sound decisions. Miles, Randolph, Bonzi, they are no Roy that is for sure. As far as Millsap goes, he will go back to the Eastern Conference somewhere and Utah will get junk and money in return. They are one team that will not be competition for Portland because they won't have much depth in the paint. It was a smart move by KP. I want to see what happens the rest of this Summer. I wonder if Freeland will get invited to training camp since he couldn't compete in Summer League due to his commitment to Eurobasket.

Yeah we sure gave into Darius Miles quick back in the day and gave him his max contract. Look at how that turned out for us!

Not to say that Roy would do that but I think Paul is a lot more cautious about long term contracts these days. With the biggest jackass we have ever had Darius Miles teaching him a tough lesson about paying players big time money.
