Trail Blazers (3-3) Vs. Jazz (4-3)

    What To Watch For

    Nicolas Batum's Consistency
After failing to score 20 or more points through the first five pre-season games, Nicolas Batum came out like gangbusters against the Jazz Monday night, scoring 27 points in a variety of ways. He got to the line, worked in a new dribble pull-up, and was money from downtown. This is the Nicolas Batum Portland needs on a nightly basis; not just one out of every three games. If the Trail Blazers can see this type of production from Batum, that could make them a sleeper team to get that last playoff spot out West. The last pre-season game will be a good measuring stick to see how consistent Nico has become.

    Highlight Hickson Returns For Good?
I guess it should come as no surprise that JJ Hickson returned to his April form with LaMarcus Aldridge out of the lineup. For whatever reason, Hickson's mindset changes when LA is out and he's a completely different animal. Not only did he nearly rack up a double-double (16 & 8), but he filled up the box score (3, dimes, 3 steals, 1 block) and did so efficiently (8-9 shooting). LA will return Thursday against Utah and if JJ starts again, take a close look and see if his demeanor changes at all with the L-Train in the lineup. Should we bring JJ off the bench, because you can't just not play LA?

If we can get a good road game on thursday out of both Nico and JJ, I think it's going to be hard not to get more excited about the potential we could have even this year... the roster is going to get stronger as our rooks develop and we trim the fat, but if we can get immediate production from those 2 it gives us some strong weapons. Combine that with players that are seeming to really absorb the Stotts/Canales defensive ideas, and we might be in for more surprises than we're willing to admit.

    Bring on the season

I've stated before that we have more depth than most people think and defense is definitely the key. Also high percentage shooting. Freeland was the X factor for new guys last game and if his shot continues to fall, we'll win some games. JJ Hickson is a flat out beast who is a huge asset to this squad. Damien Lillard amazed me with his staying out of foul trouble after picking up 2 quick fouls. Second time he's done that. When Ronnie gets back we're deeper at the pt than I thought. I really hope we pick up Karl and Pavlovic..those guys make plays. I think Meyers will be on again off again for at least half the season and Barton has talent but not a lot of discipline so far. At any rate I like our starting lineup and potential bench rotation. I also think the Stampede will be pretty good this year. Let the games begin!!!

This will be the first preseason game where the core starters will play about 30 minutes. It will be a last gasp game for guys trying to make the roster. I think Stotts wants a win in a road game for a change. We'll see more of JJ and LA together than we've seen since late last season. Go Blazers!

This was by design. The fact that L.A. didnt play for our last televised game speaks volumes as to how close to the vest Stotts is exposing our system to the media. Anyone who thinks that Hickson wasnt going to be our center at the start of the season is on something. Whether he ends the season as our center is definitely up for serious debate. In the eastern conference, he played competently enough against D.Howard as a member of the Cavaliers as their center. Mind you, Cleveland didnt have the roster we currently do. I still think JJ is better suited off the bench to spark the second unit.Id much rather that Leonard take his lumps early. If for no other reason than to test his resolve. I hate the term " rookie" being thrust on all newbies. In the Marine Corps, i proved myself to be everything but a maggot. An affectionate moniker bestowed upon all new recruits. Im particualrly sickened by any entry that uses the the easy way out teminology of a rookie undergoing, "learning curves". You're here because you can ball. Get to ballin.

Non-televised games might be a way to keep the media out of things. But the league can still scout and get tape, so I'm not sure it was entirely by design. However, I do think this game might be the closest to a real rotation. The faces could be different for the regular season (i.e., they might bring in players that ultimately get cut), but the bench players will probably come in at the real times. In that sense, the bench contribution might be the biggest thing to watch. I wouldn't pay attention to the win/loss as much as whether our bench players can produce at the times they are called upon.

I also think I buy what you're selling about rookies, common. It's impossible to lump a group of guys into one category and essentially expect a similar performance for them. There are break-outs and busts in every draft class, and there are wide ranges of experience in the rookie group (especially in our group of Damian, Meyers, Will, Joel, and Victor).

Exactly D-Pick.I really would like to see Karl get a shot. I like his grit. And is it me or does he play with a bit more of a chip on his shoulder than Nolan, who by his lackluster performances as of late should have him playing like a madman to retain his spot. Im starting to think that because P-Town is a one team town that i tend to get a bit more emotionally attached to our squad than i should, and hate to see anyone go. Holy Marshmallow Batman, am i getting soft ?

We can all agree that this was an off game for Lillard, right? Can I just say that, if our PG still gets 12 and 5 when he's off, I think we've found our guy for the future? That would've been a good night for Ray Felton (at least the Felton we got).

    Nic:          17
    Wesley:    24
    LaMarcus:  19
    JJ:           11
    Damian:    12
    Bench:      8

I'm loving our starting lineup... I'm crying about our bench.

Was at the game tonight and if the whole team gets rid of the stupid turnovers and works better inside then we can start to play alright.

INSIDE play is so key... less 3's more post, Aldridge has worked on both direction down low, Wes is slashing great, JJ's a beast and even Nico has developed post moves! So much more reliable than endless outside shooting, which should be the backup to our aggressive inside play.

Agreed, 247. I keep seeing comments like "we need to go inside if the 3 isn't falling." That's backwards. We need to go inside period. If the D clogs the middle, start kicking it out to shooters (who will be wide open more often).

Oh, and on inside scoring you forgot to mention Damian's ability to penetrate and finish in traffic. Tony Parker lead the league in Points in the Paint at one time. I'm not saying Dame will do that, but he's that kind of guard that can get inside and finish.

Now that Karl, Morrison and Holliday are waived I hope Barton develops into the slasher and sparkplug at the two instead of Smith. Barton has the ability to finish at the rim in traffic. As he gets more time and learns the offense he could be a real plus off the bench with Sasha, Ronnie, Claver and Leonard/Freeland. Our bench has been stagnant in the assist column and that's got to change. Ronnie and Sasha will help that as they are good passers.

Ronnie Price is going to boost the bench as well as Leonard who got clocked last game before he got started. My biggest worry is that if the 3 isn't falling, they keep jacking them up! I hope Barton develops into a sparkplug off the bench as well.
