Trail Blazers (0-0) Vs. Lakers (0-0)

    What To Watch For

    Foul Trouble In The Middle
Dwight Howard is back and he will be wreaking havoc in the paint, but can the Trail Blazer bigs stay out of foul trouble? It's very easy and tempting to foul Howard as he's about to score underneath the bucket given his sub-par free-throw percentage throughout his career, yet it could put the Blazers in a hole early if Hickson, Freeland or Leonard get into early foul trouble. In year's past Portland has had a surplus of bigs. This year? Not so much. While Aldridge can be deadly at the 5, it's not ideal to do so for long stretches against a Lakers defense that will be keying in on him. Oh, and there's that whole ordeal on the defensive end of the court. Have fun trying to defend that Howard guy and doing so without getting into foul trouble. This is my No. 1 key to the game. Keep the bigs on the floor, not on the bench!

    Run, Run, Run
Not only are the Lakers an older team in the NBA (their starting backcourt: Nash and Bryant are aged 38 and 34 years respectively) but they will have already played a game the night before in Los Angeles. Portland needs to take advantage of not only their youthful legs but of L.A.'s tired ones as well. If the Trail Blazers can rack up 20 fast-break points, they should be in fantastic shape. Also, the Lakers have arguably the best Starting 5 in the NBA, but their bench? It leaves a lot to be desired. Push the tempo and force Coach Mike Brown to make more substitutions, getting those starters off the court for as long as possible.

I think the game plan would be getting Howard into foul trouble himself! We have a lot of fouls to give on the bench between Leonard, Hickson, Freeland, Jeffries and Aldridge. Lillard has to play tough D on Nash, Wes or Nico have to shut down Kobe if he plays and our bench needs to score. LA can school Gasol anyday. I just hope our shots are falling and our defense is glue. I also hope Stotts has those hidden plays polished enough to throw the Lakers out of sync. Hope Lillard, LA, Wes and Nico score 80 pts. Door is open for an upset and the homecrowd is the X factor! Go Blazers! Pick and Roll and Run and gun!

Howard is going to expose this Blazer team's biggest and most glaring weakness. Hicky the only rotation Blazer not afraid of contact with his own shadow.
Running requires defense and rebounding. Hard to run when pulling the ball from the net. Equally difficult to run when you don't have possession.
If this team plays hard and with pride, they're winners regardless of the score. Remember, the payroll of this Laker team is LITERALLY double that of our Blazer roster this season. We'll see tonight if that was money well spent.

I hope the refs let our guys get close to Howard...I remember back when the lakers had shaq we couldn't even touch him or a whistle went off...not mention most of our bigs are rookies. Howard and Gasol are gonna camp out inside...box out. Is Kobe even a for sure thing, I know he is questionable for tonights game against the Mavs. At least we have home court...Rose Garden Baby!

Least we forget,Hickson played against Howard rather competently when he was in Cleveland. Im not saying he's a Dwight stopper, but he is athletically enough to keep up with DH. Contest shots, and make Howard himself play some D. With Freeland on the floor DH has to come away from the basket because he has to respect Joel's shot. Our secret weapon is Stotts, and the willingness of the team to absorb what he's telling them about containing DH. I dont remember Orlando ever dominating the Mavericks. The key to this game turning in our favor is going to be Batum. The X factor is going to be Claver. I dont think he'll have many jitters once he's on the floor and sees his countrymen Gasol on the opposing team. Lillard being the student of the game that he is,i dont think that he'll make the same mistakes twice against Nash. He'll learn from Nash, but he wont be in awe of him. Our focus had better be to keep Artest off the boards for the easy put backs. Its going to be team defense that wins this game. Every game for that matter. BDawg is correct, its pride thats going to win us games. I think we have a couple of never say die cats on our squad. Lillard and Matthews on paper are a dangerous backcourt. If they play to their potential, theres not a team in the league that will not respect that. Nicholas i cant stress enough how enough it is for him to get off. He is easily a 20/5/5/2* guy. We may not have a true center as of yet, but what we do have is 18 fouls. 9 of which have to send a message that says, " dont bring that weak caca in here ! ". I think we're a .500 team if we dont try. If we put forth our best effort though, i think we'll surprise some people. Even ourselves. Go Blazers !!!!

Opening night:  Lakers by 15.  I hope I am wrong.  Most of the participants in these message boards are optimists.  I am a cross between pessimist and a realist.  We are young, new, with a new coach, which is not a good design for a team to test for the playoffs.

Blazers by 5. Im an Optilist. Running is the name of the game, and the fact that L.A. will be coming in on a back to back, makes me like our chances even more. These Lakers arent spring chickens anymore. The formula is simple, we run, we win. We may make rookie mistakes, but their mistakes will come at the hands of fatigue. Literally. Once the feet cant move as they once did, the hands over compensate. 82 games is going to expose the fossils this year. Rip City !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rebounding, 2nd chance pts and not turning it over will give us what we need. Howard is a terrible freethrow shooter but Feta World Cheese has to be contained. He is their X factor and always has good games against us because he doesn't get double teamed. Getting Howard, Feta World Cheese and Gasol into foul trouble will help us. We make free throws. I like our chances at home. Especially if Wes and Nico are shooting well. Isn't every fan an optimist at home for the first game of the season? I'm tired of the media already crowning the Lakers as the champs this year before they've done anything.

Watched Howard shoot a god-awful percentage from the line AND foul out. Leonard, Freeland, Hickson, Jeffries. That's 24 fouls on Howard if necessary. If it's a win we want, I might just know a strategy....

Did you guys see the Dallas game!!! Lakers looked awful! :D

There big men looked good sadly but thats pretty much it. Loving there "Princeton" offense!!! Hahah there half court game isnt looking too good.

I have a strong feeling Dame will have a FIELD day tomorrow !! Nash is way too slow. Even if Howard or Gasol comes in Leonard, LA, or Hickson will be open. They cant guard us if we just keep running. Fast Breaks D was a flaw in the Dallas game.

Hack-a-Dwight worked well. He was only 3-14 against Dallas. That's 21%. Use 'em if you got 'em.

The Lakers really turn the paint into a mosh-pit for rebounds. The Mavs worked really hard to control the glass. Blazer have got to do the same thing.

After seeing the Lakers play I said to my mother you better beat the Lakers while you can because they won't be this bad the whole season they are a work in progress just like us, I like our chances especially at home if we have energy on defense, stay in striking distance on the glass and get 15 or more assists I don't see why we can't win but, I would be lying if I wasn't a little cautious because of how badly LA played we have to be ready and not underestimate them or we might get a preview of how good this team can when they start to gel. I say we win by 7.

As much as I dislike the Lakers, I was thrilled to see them bogged down in a half court against the Mavs bench players. Elton Brand outplayed Dwight Howard and Collison outplayed Nash. This is our game to win if we bring it tonight. I predict Mike Brown will be the first coach fired this season. We just need to rebound and move the ball. Vince Carter looked reborn last night. I'm optimistic against the team the media has already crowned champions of the Western Conference! Go Blazers!

Our offense is gonna be key... i think if we can get them to run a half court offense we should be a good position. Nash looked LOSTwhen he wasnt running

Dame: 23 and 11... yeah he had a lot of turnovers, but that's gotta be chalked up as one of the greatest rookie debuts ever. I like this kid. I like him a lot.

Our starters are clicking well, and JJ has played well alongside Adridge the last couple games. Everyone in double figures, 3 guys at 20+, and two with double-doubles.

I'm still concerned about a couple things. First of all, our bench needs to be able to produce more (although Sasha looked great). 13 points is not enough from a second unit. The starters won't always have games like that, and the production has to come from somewhere.

The other thing I didn't like: no Freeland this game. I'm hoping that had more to do with the match-up situation than a tight rotation from Stotts. I know top-tier teams can get away with rotating 8 or 9 guys, but we're not a top-tier team, and we need to get experience for all our young guys.

In all fairness, our bench was feeding the starters when on the court and didn't need to force shots. This was a tight rotation and not an excercise in checking out the bench, we needed to feed Nico, Wes, LA, Dame and JJ and we did. Nolan stunk it up but Pavlovic actually turned the tide with incredible play in a handful of minutes. When's the last time you saw a freethrow shooter rebound his own freethrow? Than turn around and nail a 3, get a steal and set up a teammate. Meyers was our only 7 ft bench player to get minutes other than Jeffries and Jeffries got Howard a couple of quick fouls. I liked the game plan and if we're not top tier, why did we just beat the team ranked # 1 in the west?

While it woulda been nice to see the bench more, we did run nine deep and this frankly isn't the preseason anymore. Stotts did a great job building an energized and competitive lineup for tonight.

i know everyone's down on the bench production tonight, and the box score agrees with you on that. But watching live, Leonard had a beast of a game vs the leagues best center and only picked up 3 fouls in extended minutes, a good sign. Jeffries while he didnt put up hardly any numbers spelled starters for almost ten minutes without a single turnover, which is what we need from a guy like that. And hell, if we an get that Sasha once a week even I'd be happy!

overall great game, but there's still 81 to go, I say the blazers need to steal the up football mantra and just win the day.

Excellent offensive game. Nolan is still my biggest doubt, can't wait to see Ronnie Price as a backup pg and providing some chaos in opponents D. I lost my confidence in Nolan recently so much that his every appearance on the court is making me worried about our offensive style and general self-confidence level. I also agree Freeland should be involved in rotation.

Leonard is obviously stotts' pick as the first big off the bench, however it is likely that he will be in foul trouble often which will lend itself to freeland taking those minutes when Leonard is sent back to the bench early.

Last night's game was a nice way to start the season. Batum showed he still has some aggression left in him which is good to see. Lillard was a stud and showed every doubter he can pass. You won't force 25 turnovers every night and you won't shoot over 50% every night. How the team handles adversity will go a long way to determine if they are a 30 win team or a playoff contender.

Great win, but unless someone steps up off the bench, it's going to be a long year for our starters. Sasha was a spark in the 3rd quarter but we need more out of Nolan, Meyers, and Jared offensively. Maybe Babbitt can play a little more, because he can knock down shots.

We need more Nolan riding the pine in my opinion. Ronnie Price returning is going to shore up the bench production and give Meyers some alley oops. I'd rather see Claver and Barton is short minutes than Babbit and I think last night Stotts rotation was smart. Howard would have destroyed Freeland. Sasha is a gem, a playmaking machine. Against top tier competition I want to see JJ, LA, Nico, Wes and Damian on the court major minutes. Sasha is stepping up off the bench and I think Meyers did too last night defensively. Look at the starters offensive production and I'd rather see 5 guys in double figures than Luke with a few 3pt shots and no defensive stops on the other end. Stotts impressed me last night. If we're up by 20 in the 4th, then let the bench get some burn.

Agree @Hoop22,Riverman.... I've been sayin this for awhile, Nolan looks so out of place, stops his dribble half the time or make really questionable decisions. Absolutely no confidence.

    Loved:
EVERY Blazer Starter. Everyone stepped up, Batum showed his worth, aldridge with his versatility, and Dame and Wes showing one of the top back courts I've seen in the West.

Leonard was Awesome to me. Showed some true grind, getting in the face of THE Dwight Howard, that's intimidating for a Rookie, he showed up and said hell no Dwight I don't take no shit lol, I mean he definitely wasn't perfect, or heck even that great overall. But I liked that fire, we all knew he wasn't going to be perfect from the getko but damn did I like that he got Dwight a Technical, and Dwight almost fouled out. Leonard maintained composure and frustrated their bigs.

    Sasha, to all the haters...

And lastly Stotts, had a hell of a game plan, a lot of great plays and playing certain matchups different ways. And really good rotation(given that Price was out)

    Didn't like:
Nolan, nothin' new. Been saying this, but he's a Blazer so I still love every loyal team member til the end, but iiiiddkkkkk guys..

The Lakers jerseys... Kinda annoyed me, it just didn't look right. Wear white next time....

Nash going out, I kind of would have liked to see us compete with him in there tooin the second half.
