NEW YORK -- Greg Oden, trying to make it back after a career-threatening knee injury, endured a slight setback Wednesday as he was held out of practice with swelling in his left knee.

Oden missing practice comes two days after he had his first 5-on-5 workout since starting his comeback attempt with the Heat. His highlight Monday was blocking a shot by LeBron James.

Oden's return to contact work had spurred some optimism that he could play in a preseason game. Those hopes have been dimmed now as he's had to ease off his workload.

The Heat and Oden have been very careful to avoid setting a timetable for the center's return in part because they're preparing for setbacks such as this.

"This has been three years for me, as long as it's no surgery, it's OK," said Oden, who last played in an NBA game in 2009. "This is going to be a long season, I'm going to get there."

The Heat training staff measures Oden's troublesome knees before and after every workout to monitor any swelling. The team has moved cautiously but had slowly been increasing his workload as he responded well to the first weeks of training camp and the preseason. Getting back to doing full-court work was an anticipated step.

"I was hoping it didn't (swell up) but it did, but what can I do about it?" Oden said. "Next thing to do is get (the swelling) back down and get out there and figure out what I can do to not let it swell again."

hope this guy can get it together.

We can only hope the best for Greg Oden. We wish him only good things in his life. He is a bright young man who loves basketball.

But in my opinion, his body actually letting him play at the high level of NBA basketball, is more then likely not part of his future. I only wish someone would strongly advise him not to mess up his legs any worse then they already are. He should be relaxing on a tropical beach in Florida, not pounding the hardwood with the Heat.

Miami signing Oden is just like Minnesota signing BRoy. Unfortunately I think it'll reap the same results. Greg should get his degree if he hasn't yet and have a plan B firmly in place. Scientific method says he's really, really fragile and jumping up to rebound and landing that much weight on a wooden surface requires some pretty strong knees and ankles. I fully expect to see him in a suit on crutches watching games. If he can play 12 minutes off the bench, he's a talented center for sure but there's that pesky "if" again. We'll just have to see. I think he should have tried the D league to get back in the game.

I still believe Riverman's D League after an Injury idea is GENIUS

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
