Trail Blazers (16-14) vs. Clippers (18-9)

The final game of Portland's back-to-back-to-back pits them up against one of the best in the West -- the Los Angeles Clippers. The Trail Blazers could be without their superstar, LaMarcus Aldridge, for at least another game even though Aldridge tweeted out to his fans that he's getting better. Although he is officially lsited as questionable, it would be a big surprise to see the L-Train out on the court 48 hours after the injury occurred. Ankle injuries can linger for a while and given Portland's injured history, it might be the wise decision to continue holding him out until that ankle is 100% even though everyone wants to see the marquee matchup of the night -- Aldridge v. Griffin.

The two teams have already met twice this season with each holding serve on their own home court. Back on New Years Day, the Clippers race out to a huge lead before having to fight off a valiant Rip City rally in the fourth. And just nine days later it was the Trail Blazers returning the favor, winning 105-97. Five players scored in double figures in that win, four scoring as much as 17 points, led by Gerald Wallace's 20. If Portland is to pull the upset off tonight without Aldridge and snap their three-game home losing streak, they need Crash to lead the charge, much like he did last night in Oakland. Gerald led all Blazers in scoring with 24 points and became the only player in franchise history to make at least four 3-pointers and eight free throws without missing.

As always, it comes to down stopping Chris Paul. Like all great point guards, he runs the show to a tee and when he's on, their a tough team to knock off. Back on January 10th, Portland kept him bottled up, only allowing CP3 to score 11 points (4-9), grab 4 rebounds and hand out 3 assists. For whatever reason, Paul seems to play passive against Portland, never quite looking for his own offense. And that is the key for Portland. If he's not shooting the ball, there's no need to play him tight and allow him to drive and dish. Ray Felton and Jamal Crawford must also make him work on defense. Ray had one of his best games as a Blazer during that game, scoring 17 points on 50% shooting all while finding time to dish out 8 assists compared to only three turnovers.

    Rosen's Report: Clippers At Blazers

    How The Clippers Can Win
Chris Paul has to use his speed and quickness to avoid being bullied by Raymond Felton, to take full advantage of the defensive ineptitude of Mo Williams, and to navigate his way around and/or through the inevitable double teams he will face.  Look for CP3 to have a big game.
The part-time replacement for Billups in the starting lineup is Randy Foye, more of a defensive guy that a scorer. In starting Foye, Williams retains his role as scorer off the bench, so only one slot is altered.  In any event, Williams will get the lion’s share of daylight at the point — and he has to compensate for his defensive weaknesses by scoring points by the dozen.

    How The Blazers Can Win
This means playing Griffin soft whenever he turns and faces. That’s because he lacks even the semblance of a stroke. Also, when Griffin is in the low-post, he tends to make a power dribble then change direction by spinning blindly — alert weakside defense can create turnovers. If Griffin plays barely adequate man-to-man defense, he gets lost when his man is off-the-ball. Batum and Marcus Camby can free themselves with judicious backcuts.
Batum has to knock down his jumpers, not dribble himself into trouble, and outrun whoever’s guarding him. At the other end, Batum’s off-ball defense is superior to his mano-a-mano coverage, so he must stay home more than is his wont and avoid taking risky chances.
Because Felton only shoots twenty percent from beyond the arc, expect Crawford to get more burn at the point. With his herky-jerky moves and ability to always create a shot, Crawford has to tally a minimum of 25 points against Paul’s under-sized and Williams non-existent defense. This is of primary importance since, without Aldridge serving as the focus of the offense, Crawford is the only go-to point-maker left standing. But he must still be conscious of his penchant for overhandling.

Charlie Rosen also gives us his 5 things to watch for which include how the Clippers will go under the pick and roll when Felton is in the game in order to force him to shoot from the outside and don't be surprised if Wallace and Matthews get soem time on Paul since CP3 doesn't fare too well against bigger guards.

Look, Kurt Thomas has fouls to give, Craig Smith has fouls to give, Chris Johnson has fouls to give. Even throw Luke Babbitt in there and FOUL. Griffin and Jordan are not that good at free throws.

This loss stings. Up 18 in the 3rd and to watch that lead slowly but surely dwindle down was hard to watch. As much as I wanted to win, you knew the lead was going away, it was just a matter of time. It was as if our lead was the sand in the hourglass sliding away ever so much. They played hard, there's no denying that but you could tell both teams were struggling to keep their legs in this one.

Also, when does Jamal get the start? Felton going 0-7 with 5 turnovers just isn't helping right now. I know he's not the only one struggling out of our guards but sometimes change needs to be made for the benefit of the team. It's worked out so far for Batum, so you never know.

I blame Nate! This team couldn't even run up and down the court let alone make a basket in the 4th quarter and it's because he rode them too hard the previous two games. Why did we waste our starters against the Wiz when it was clear as day we weren't winning that game? And why, on the third game in three nights, does he only play 9 players?

And seriously, how badly does Raymond have to play for Nolan to get ANY burn? This team isn't good or deep enough, esp  at the guard position to be letting our first round pick rot on the bench. Also, love seeing Chris Johnson sitting on the bench the entire night. We got KILLED on the glass, 47-35, and without LA, we could have used CJ's length on the boards.

We didn't keep Batum involved...period!!! That is the first reason we lost this game. Next is Felton...it is time he has to earn his starting position back. JC needs to start...and for all those JC bashers, at least he has the guts to try and get to the hole or make something happen...I admire that and I thought he was hacked up a few times tonight going to the hole that was not called. I just don't see how professional's can miss so many darn shots. Once again we had the game for the taking and blew it. I have said it before and I will say it again...if this team ever get's it's act together, nobody will be able to touch them...god, let's hope that is soon!

    peace out,

Nobody in the organization cares what we think... As long as we as fans sell out the Rose Garden every game they will continue putting mediocre players like Matthews and Felton on the floor and we fit the bill! Felton sucks so bad defenses wont even guard him!! We traded a PG who KNEW he couldn't shoot (Miller), so he set teammates up with quality looks for a PG who thinks he CAN shoot and cant hit better that 30% ANYWHERE on the floor while compiling more turnovers than assists! Mathews is a great slashing 2 guard, but were asking him to do too much! I miss BRoy.. When he retired we should have gone into rebuild mode instead of putting teams like this together on the floor and asking us to support them while they get knocked out in the 1st rd for the next 4 yrs and we cant get a decent draft pick. We as fans should feel slapped in the face

Move Batum to point. No one knows how to get him the ball. Crawford is NOT a point guard. Sadly, he's a better option than Felton at this point, but JC looks to score first, pass later. And Felton isn't doing much of anything these days. So when you get such poor play from the floor generals, its hard to sustain good play when you do get it.

Ray Felton is the sole reason of this lost, 0 for 7 from the field,5 turnovers, total of 12 precious possesions lost. How bad is that? And the things we ended up losing in just a ONE possession game.Nate must be playing blind if he still play Felton for another 1 minute this season.

felton still plays tough D i think a lot of his shots are forced up because he has no one to pass to because people quit cutting, i think maybe he shouldnt start for a while but i dont think it's time to jump on the burn him at the stake train and blame him for everything yet. its like they think oh second half its time for nate to run isos and we can just stare at roy or this years roy (in nates mind) crawford. Jcross played with heart tonight, i dont blame him for anything. looked like batum and wallace and all the bigs ran out of gas.

We went away from Batum, felton was 0 for 6, but we did need crawford to try to take over, get your points in the offense crawford, you are not kobe or jordon, stop taking bad shots over and over again

Crawford has played better than  any Blazer in the last 8 or so games, as far as consistancy goes. I want him taking the shots, he's the only player on the team that can create his own shot. He's streaky, either he's hot or he's not, that's the way he always has been. He's definitely no Roy, but it's the best we got right now as a ball handler, and creating shots.

I'm not happy with Felton either, but if you take the time to see what is happening most of the time you can't totally place the blame all on him. You can't pass the ball when nobody gets open or cuts. He is being forced to throw up shots at the buzzer way too often because he can't find someone to pass to. He's the point guard, he's supposed to bring the ball up, when nobody cuts to get a pass or gives him a screen and the shot clock is at 3 with 2 guys in his face, I don't care who you are it is going to be tough to make a favorable play. The same thing is happening to Crawford but he's just shooting better and can create space for himself.

If anything, TNT's Steve Kerr was able to give Elliot Williams a new nickname: Bouncy Legs
