Is It Time To Put Elliot In The Regular Rotation?
Yes - He's earned it & has the most potential of all of our guards (47)
     100%
No - We're still in the playoff hunt, let's roll with more experienced wings (0)
     0%

The Trail Blazers blew out the Spurs by 40 points last night. But that win was secondary on the minds of Rip City. Everyone couldn't stop talking about how well the rookie, Elliot Williams looked. Elliot found himself on the floor for a season-high 18 minutes, six of those even coming in the middle part of the second quarter, and he made the most of his opportunity, scoring a career-high 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Of course the highlight-reel dunks enamor the BlazerManiacs but dig a little deeper into the box score and you'll find a player getting the little thing done. For starters, he attacks the basket like no other guard on the roster as proven by his six free-throw attempts, matched only by Gerald Wallace last night who played nearly 15 minutes more. And they weren't cheap fouls he was drawing either. Elliot put the pressure on the defense as he drove the lane and forced the D to put him on the line. Along with driving to the hoop, Williams showed he has potential to be a very good rebounding guard. Even though he's only 6-5, his outstanding jumping ability allows him to go up and grab everything in sight. He had a respectable three boards against San Antonio, including one where he ripped the ball away from three other Spurs underneath the hoop, preventing an easy offensive putback. As soon as I saw that, I turned to my friend and said, "That right there is how he's going to see more playing time."

Last night was no fluke. For those who have seen all the games this year, you'd know by now that when Elliot comes in when the game's already in hand, he performs well and does so in an efficient manner. In the three prior games leading up to the Spurs bout (Clippers, Hawks, Lakers), Elliot shot a perfect 5-5 from the field in a combined 12 minutes of action, including two from downtown. Speaking of the trifecta, does anyone give Elliot a run for prettiest looking jump shot on the team? It may just be me, but there's something about a lefty that's poetry in motion to watch. Although he's just 5-17 from three on the season, he's connected on four of his last 10, further proving the point that he's only getting better with more, consistent minutes.

So let's hear it Rip City, is it time for E-Will to crack the regular rotation? If you're still undecided, enjoy these clips of E-Will flying high for your viewing pleasure.

Eliot's game from college has a rare benefit of translating perfectly into the NBA. His jumper is not only pretty, it's textbook quick-release. He already knows how to get his shot up fast without sacrificing form, and that's exactly what Luke Babbitt has been missing. Couple that with the fact that he's quick and can jump like a grasshopper... (in fact I think we should call him Grasshopper) he deserves more minutes, and that might be possible if Jamal at point becomes a more permanent thing (although I'm not sure it should).

Not ready to say he has "the most potential of all our guards" like it was worded, but he's definitely earned a spot in the rotation with increasing minutes! You can't teach that kind of energy, you can only hope to keep a guy like that around, and like with Gerald, Wesley, and Patty in the past, that it's infectious to others on the team.

Also, was just watching SportsNation this afternoon, I don't remember the segment name but they were goin through clips comparing 2 side by side and picking a favorite, then seeing what the fans picked... Elliot Williams (in the first clip you posted above) was up against Paul George throwin down the tomahawk. Both of the hosts picked George (isn't he slated for the dunk contest? hmmm), but who did the polls go with? Elliot freakin Williams, of the lil ol' Portland Trailblazers.

Was also funny cuz when they first showed the clip of EDubs throwin down, one of the hosts made a comment about "before this dunk, nobody... NOBODY knew who this kid was", don't we know better.

Give him minutes! He's a different style of guard and the others need help! Keepin a deeper rotation will throw off defenses, keep Blazers' legs fresh, and gain vital experience for our young guns without putting everything on their backs at once! We're going to need all our guns, young and old, firing at full power later on in this rough season... and oh yeah, EDUBS HAS KILLER TALENT there's that too, put him in the game coach!

and good point about the D_Pickett about Grasshopper's quick release, not only is it what makes him so much more ready for the game at this level, it's exactly what is STILL holding Cha-Luke-a back. Even when he hit his shot last night, it wouldn't have happened if he had a defender in his face. The kid is still too starry eyed for the Big Game, sorry Luke!

But Elliot, Nolan, and even Chris are as ready as we need for their respective roles! Put em in the game!

    GO BLAZERS!

Elliot Williams is an experienced rookie. Remember now, he was with the team for most all of last season as a practice player. You got to give him some reps. It's becoming ridiculous that Williams can't find playing time on a team with a record only a sliver above .500.

I'd like to add one more thing if I may,

Coach McMillan needs to put ego's and paychecks aside, and Coach this team better. If you got guys who are throwing up ugly shots and shooting terrible, then they need to be benched. Our guards have been cracking the backboard with all this missed shots. Next time somebody goes 0-4, then jogs back on defense and allows an easy layup. Bench him, it's that simple. We can't win games with our guards shooting 20%. Unless LaMarcus drops 40, but we lose some of those too.

Aldridge was asked who he thought would have a breakout season this year before the start and he picked Elliot Williams.  I bet there have been some sick performances behind the scenes that none of us even know about.  The drawback...my guess is that Nate doesn't see the maturity/impulse control to play a percentage game yet.  If/when he cracks the rotation, I believe that we will see flaws in that area.  Learning impulse control takes experience on the court, however.  I think the returns will pay off if we can get him some opportunities to start learning.  I'm not sure we have anything to lose if we throw him in when we're down three with a minute left.  I would trust Elliot over anyone other than Jamal and Lamarcus at this point in that situation...but that's more about what the other guys AREN'T...not what Elliot IS.

If Batum is playing 2 guard, then I'd have to say ewill definitely doesn't have "the most potential of all our guards", but take Nico out and I'd have to agree. The same comment was made about Ewill on the Top Ten plays for Tues (his dunk was #3).

Worst place to be in professional sports is mediocre.  This franchise, after two decades of such mediocrity, is now more than ripe for a new direction.  Why fight for a first round and out one more year, setting the table for the same next year?  I want more and can be patient, supporting a rebuilding effort featuring players like EW with more prominent roles.

Elliot has showed promise in some areas that some of our other guards are lacking.  He's not perfect but with more time he'll only continue to get better.  We are still in the playoff hunt and I would hate to see us miss out but would hate it even more if we didn't start to develop some of the young talent we have.  We need to find a finisher, something we seem to be lacking in some of our close games and I think Elliot might be able to fill the void and bring some energy to the team.

DIME Magazine just put out their list of 5 players who need a chance to play and Elliot was one of the five.
Here's what they had to say about E-Will-
His 17 points in 18 minutes against San Antonio, which included this hammer of a dunk over Danny Green, was basically a rookie vs. sophomore game between the Spurs and Blazers. Matched up against his peers, Williams shows why he needs more PT for Nate McMillan. He’s only getting 5.6 minutes per, but if he played 36 minutes, he’d average 21.9. The crazy athleticism (he recorded a 48-inch vertical during a pre-draft camp for Portland in 2010, people) that turned heads in training camp in December also opens up his quick-burst scoring that’s improved with his jumper.
Link: The Jeremy Link Effect: The 5 NBA Players Who Need A Chance To Play

While it's just one person's opinion, it's nice to see that its not just the Trail Blazer fans up in the Pacific Northwest clamoring for more Elliot. Usually when the national media gets a hold of a story or starts to take notice, it validates the statement in question (Should Elliot play more?).

LOL why on earth do you jump to TRADE so quickly? We have an 8-man rotation, going in to the second half of the season there is NO REASON AT ALL that we can't add some depth to the rotation and spread the minutes out a little... without having to trade anyone!!!

Please, fans need to stop thinking of our team as some sort of video-game style revolving door. Keep the players and let them get better!

TRADES ARE RARELY THE THE ANSWER.

Plus, people should realize that "trade talk" is the EASY way out for fan discussions...

Anyone can throw names out there and see what others respond to, but we all know it doesn't make a sliver of difference what fans say, IFFFFF it actually came down to a trade.

It's wayyyy more interesting for fans if we can learn to talk about BASKETBALL, NOT TRADES.

Analyze the play of the game, digest any news about the team, and learn some basic fundamentals or game dynamics (in turn making you a more knowledgable fan/player just by posting on forums), and put your knowledge to use discussing what can be done WITHOUT TRADES to improve our Blazers.

If you don't want to go the analytical route in posts, then just show some Blazer passion and be optimistic (you know, like a FAN)!!! I'm always happy to read as someone breaks down part of the game, some stats, or even just gives a passionate plea or shout out to our team :) But either way, seeing people invade every single post with trade talks is BORING AND DEPRESSING.

STOP TALKING TRADES. TALK REAL BASKETBALL.

Give the kid more playing time.  He's earned it.  Worst case scenario is that you drop some Ws.  How's that any worse than where the team is?  I'd rather have a good seed than another first round exit.  So far Williams has made a stronger case for MORE playing time than less.  Get him out there.  Give him a damn chance.

I really think that E-Will is the best "rookie" on the team! He is freakish athletic and have alot of basic basketball unlike very many other athletic guys in the league. He attacks the basket and goes ALOT to the FT line and to be honest we dont have many of those FTguys on the team. Heck Coach K let him run the Duke team so he must have seen something in him! McMillan should have the same approach as Pop look how those young guys are flourishing for San Antonio seriously!!! Garbage time is meant for Babitt not for a guy like E-Will I think hes solid!

    5 pts

All in 8 minutes. Is it just me, or is Elliot averaging just under a point per minute in his last few appearances? Play him 20 minutes just for one game and see what you get out of him (and I'm not talking about garbage time here).

    From Joe Freeman-
Young Trail Blazers Head To 'Finishing School'
In recent weeks, Williams has separated himself from his peers on the court, revealing the high-flying hops, in-your-face defense and aggressiveness that NBA scouts projected he possessed entering the 2010 NBA draft. But it didn't come together overnight. Williams, like the rest of his young teammates, has been working all season for this moment.
"He's certainly earned the right to get some minutes," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "I think he can play. I like his energy, his scrap, his aggressiveness on both ends of the floor. It's something fresh ... and I like what he's giving us."
Then there's Williams. Team insiders believe Williams has the most potential of the group and is destined to become a starter. His explosive athleticism, which includes an incredible 48-inch vertical leap, is second-to-none. But he also has dramatically improved his shooting and right-handed dribbling and passing skills after sitting out the entire 2010-11 season with dual knee surgeries.

And Mike Barret echos the comments above, stating that he believes we will see more Elliot than usual on this road trip-
    The "Opportunity" Road Trip-
"Along with Aldridge and Felton, there is another Portland player who I think is a key to this trip, and it might surprise you. You will be seeing more and more of Elliot Williams, as he has proven to Nate McMillan that he plays the right way. For Nate, as you probably know, that's huge. I had a long conversation with Nate, about Elliot, before we boarded our flight on Tuesday morning. There's a budding love affair growing there. He's beginning to trust Williams, and I think you'll see his minutes increase on this trip. Elliot has 48 points in 55 minutes in the last seven games, and continues to grow into a player who can get to the rim and break down a defense. The Blazers don't have many of those."
