Best of luck to a loyal guy. A change of scenery will probably do him a world of good with his career moving forward.

    From Mavs.com's Earl K. Sneed-

Statement from Rick Carlisle: "On April 16th Jim O'Brien informed me that he would be retiring from coaching when our season was over. Jim said he loved working in the Mavs organization, but being away from family made his decision easy. I consider Jim O'Brien a great basketball man of high integrity and thank him for everything he taught me, my staff and our players this past season. We are fortunate that Kaleb Canales became available and had interest in joining the Mavs organization. Kaleb has worked for the Portland Trailblazers organization in multiple capacities for the last 9 years, and brings great knowledge, enthusiasm and work ethic to the Mavs. He will join Monte Mathis and Tony Brown on the bench and take over in Coach O'Brien's capacity of coordinating our offense."

The blazers lacked rebounding fundamentals, proper defensive rotations, had terrible help defense and gave up the most points in the paint. Stotts job was to make the players and team better on defense that did not happen thus terrible at his job.

I think when you're hired as a defensive coordinator and your team has the worst defense in the nba you take responsibility. If the head coach had the worst record in the league he'd be out the door. Kaleb needs a fresh situation. He's the guy who lobbied hard for Babbit and Smith to return after 2 years of working after hours with them. I thought it was kind of Stotts to offer the competition a job when he got hired but in hindsight it was probably a mistake.

How about Marcin Gortat...then get Lin with the 10 pick and fill the rest out with a SG and SF and a another scorer, then maybe throw in O'neal...

You think Stotts recommended him? He used to coach under Coach Carlisle.

Kaleb is from Texas, has a great reputation there and all these guys know each other. I think Kaleb is a hard working guy, loyal guy but he had a losing record as a head coach when Nate was fired and really did not improve the defensive look as an assistant.

IS he a defensive coach? Or did they just stick him there?

Most likely they stuck him there RC14 did you not see our season that in itself should tell you he's not a defensive coach.

I know Kaleb was a video guy originally, so he definitely knows how to break down a game and understands strategy. I don't think his natural role is defensive coordinator, so I agree that it was a bad placement and he didn't do a good job at all. Although, I think our defense belied his skill as a coach. I think the only guy on the roster that never slacks on D is Wesley. So getting this Blazers roster to play defense was going to be a losing battle for any coach (at least any coach as young as Kaleb). Anyway, I hope he can be successful in Dallas, but I'm even more hopeful that we replace him with someone that can get these players to do work on defense.
